PENN Henry - Chief Constable
« on: Thursday 08 July 10 23:09 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find service records for Henry PENN born abt 1821 London. In 1855 he was appointed Chief Constable to Oudtshoorn and George Town, Cape Colony.
I don't find a service record in the NAAIRS index and have written to Oudtshoorn museum for help but was also unsuccessful.
His service record must be filed somewhere but I just don't know where to look.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Hi I found a document in this archive when I typed in the name. I saw in one of them. Try this link. http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm200gi.

Then click on the RSA repository box, when it opens type in Penn Henry and enter. A list of documents will appear, just click on Result Summary and then click on each and you will see what info each one contains.Death appears to be around 1920 in the Cape.
The Genealogical Society of South Africa has a "pay to use" service which will enable you to obtain pictures of documents held in the National Archives.

Go to http://www.eggsa.org and select Content --> On Line Shop --> order Archive documents.  Once you have selected the currency, select "Enter the Shop" and then select "Archive photos" (in yellow on the blue band) and follow the instructions.

Much quicker than trying to get the Archives to reply to your e-mail requests!!  Good luck Derek.

Thanks a million pumpkin .................. Henry's estate file is there and I have bought a copy already. Thank you.

What I am hoping to find his (Police) service records somewhere. I'm assuming a Chief Constable would be a policeman and therefore some sort of contract or employment record would be available. I'm not sure if Police service records would be kept in South Africa or in UK as South Africa was a colony at the time.

Thanks so much for helping

Hi try this link http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/SOUTH-AFRICA/ I used it to find my grandfathers marriage certificate. You place a post on the site asking someone to look up the police record for you.If lucky like me someone will do it for you.
Or there is Ancestry24.com in cape Town. They may have the records on their database.Cheers Derek
