Birth of Annie Wilde
« on: Friday 09 July 10 17:23 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I have found my husband's 2xg grandmother on the 1891 census that gives her place of birth as Brompton, Kent. Unfortunately, I can't find her in any of the earlier census returns.

I was wondering if she was actually born in Brompton or elsewhere!

Is there any kind soul who can help me rule out a Brompton birth?? She was born around 1854...

Realise it's not much to go on - but thank you in advance for any help!

Was she married in 1891 or single - if married what was her surname and when did she marry.

Hi Rosie -

She was married by then - but living in Liverpool! Not sure when she made the move to the north west, but thier first child was born up there in 1879, so it was before then!

Thanks for the link - will see what I can find

Just to add to confusion - 1901 census has her as born in Chatham, Kent!!

Still none the wiser! I'm not local - are these two near each other??

As Rosie requested, can you tell us who she married and when?

So far the facts don't make sense to me at the moment  - cannot find an Annie  bc.1854 Brompton/Chatham that tie in together 1881/1891/1901 although you appear to have found her.   Can you give details?

When you can't find the objective i.e. Annie Wilde bc.1854 Brompton one starts at the known and works back.   In this instance it's the census and who she married but we don't have exact details yet to enable us to trace back.

Hoping you can give us more exact information.

Sorry for the confusion.

She married Henry Hannam and was living with him in 1879 in LIverpool where she had their son Thomas Henry Hannam. Edith and Charles were also born there before the family moved down to Bath.

I have her down as Annie Marie Hannam formally Wilde on Thomas's birth certificate.

Her place of birth is noted as Brompton in 1891 and Chatham in 1901.

I cannot find the family in 1881 - but think that's to do with the name Hannam being mis-transcribed and so being harder to find. I can't find either Annie or Henry in 1871.

Does this help?

Thanks for your interest

Hi Treegirl

Well, what a tangled web this is.   First off, I cannot find a marriage between this couple anywhere - even checked Army marriages.

Have found Henry with his family in 1861 and 1871 though it was hard to find them.   In 1861 - transcribed as Hamming - at Christian Malford - ref. RG9 - 1285 - 78 - 12.   In 1871 - transcribed as Hannums - at Christian Malford - ref. RG10 - 1900 - 80 - 11.

Have looked on 2 different sites for 1881 and I don't think they are mistranscribed - I think they just managed to elude the enumerator somehow.   Have even done searches just on christian names and still they don't come up.

Now to Annie Marie Wilde.

Think I have found her - birth registered at Medway in Mar. 1855 as -
Anne Maria Wild.   She was with family in Gillingham, Kent - town of New Brompton - in 1861.   No time to note all details but they are easy to find.   In 1871 mother and siblings still in Gillingham - daughter in question is working as a servant in St. Botolph, Colchester, Essex as Anna Maria Wild.

I looked at the Army marriages because Medway district and Colchester are both army areas and I wondered if maybe that's how she met Henry.

Chatham, Gillingham, New Brompton are all part of the Medway district.

So, looks like both can now be traced although alas not their marriage nor 1881 census appearance.

Best wishes

Annette
