Barton upon Irwell - Which local office for certificates?
« on: Saturday 10 July 10 14:20 BST (UK) »
In the 1911 E&W Census, my great grandparents, James and Mary Carson, state that they have had 6 children and only 3 of them are still living.  They did have to move around quite a bit between 1886-1911 to find work (Liverpool, Widnes, Chorlton, Burton on Trent, St Helens that I know of).  I have found William (1898-1901 Burton on Trent) and have another possible Ellen 1886 (L/pool)-1890 (Prescot) which I will follow up.

I've found entries on FBMD for Patrick Joseph Carson in Barton Upon Irwell which are interesting:
Birth Q2 1905 8c 685
Death Q1 1906 8c 400

I'm not sure what the current wait is for certificates via the GRO so would like to try getting these 2 direct from the local office.  Can anyone offer advice?

Hi Kit,

Trafford council is the one for Patrick Carson's birth and death - he is listed on the Lancashire BMD site, which has online forms you can print off and send to the office

I ordered a certificate from the GRO on Tuesday (6 July 2010) and it arrived today Saturday (10 July 2010) so it's probably quicker using the GRO at the moment.

I noticed this topic because I was researching someone born in Barton Upon Irwell recently. Apparently Barton is the old name and it's now called Eccles.

Further to your info, yes Barton on Irwell inc Eccles(it was already there).
However, for certs you would now need to go /send to Swinton Town Hall which comes under Salford. That is where the registry office is now based.
Eccles,Swinton,Pendlebury,Walkden,Worsley,Irlam,Cadishead all come under Salford now.Apologies for any I may have missed.

Hi Allan, thanks for your interest.

Mary's maiden name was Ronan and she wass from Wexford.  She had a brief marriage in Liverpool to John Bo(w)land until he died (Dec 1892-Dec 1893).  It was only recently that I found out that a child was born of this marriage.  Lucy Boland (28/8/1883) can be found in the 1901/1911 Irish census living with the Ronan family in Ferns, Wexford.

Mary married James Carson from Belfast (1/11/1886)  in Liverpool and the next time I see them is the 1891 census in St Helens, Lancs.  They have 1yr old Robert.  I've only now started the search for the 2 children I didn't know about.

I'm excited about sending off for the 2 certificates.  If they are correct, I'll send off for their death certs.

bettyespana - thanks for the update on where I can get certificates locally.
