1887 Q4 Burial lookup for Jame Edmunds in Pontypool
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 03:24 BST (UK) »
I wonder if someone can possibly do a look up in parish burials during the last quarter of 1887 in the Abergavenny District in Monmouth.

I am looking for the death/burial of a James Edmunds. From the census records I have been able to find 1841 thru 1871 I estimate that his birth was about 1812. Census records state that he was born in Skenfrith, Monmouth. He was married sometime in the 1850’s to Elizabeth Morgan. I have found James and Elizabeth Edmunds  up to the 1871 Census but not in the 1881 census. In the 1881 census I found Elizabeth Edmunds and children in the Monmouth Workhouse. She was listed as being head of household but still married. There is also a child who was born in 1881 just prior to the census. I have been unable to find any reference to James Edmunds in the 1881 census. In the 1891census I found Elizabeth Edmunds again and she was listed as head of household but widowed.  So based on this information, I am assuming that James Edmunds died between 1880 and 1891. I have checked all the quarterly indexes from 1880-1891 under Edmunds and Edmonds. I found one reference that could be a possibility and it was for James Edmunds (age 71) registered in the Abergavenny District (Volume 11a, Page23). This entry is the only one close enough to feasibly be who I am looking for.

Is this enough information to be able to do a lookup? If not I totally understand and will keep looking for more information.
Thanks

Lori

not really enough info for a burial look-up. On FreeBmd, if you click on the registration district, you can see how many parishes were covered, rather a lot in this case

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/abergavenny.html

This could be their marriage
James Edmunds june qtr 1857 Monmouth vol 11a pg 83 with Elizabeth Morgan on the same page

By the way, unless I'm looking at the wrong person, I can see a James Edmunds in Skenfirth, but his place of birth is Tregare. Youngest children look to have been born in Llangattock Vibon Abel, so he may have been buried there, or in the nearest municipal cemetery.

there's a website of Monmouthshire parish record transcriptions which may be of use, but it has been down for the last week. Fingers crossed it comes back.

& click on Church Records.

Amazing church!

WOW - what an amazing church. I would so love to see it in person. We don't have churches (or buildings for that matter) that old here in Canada. I wish we did. Thanks for sending the picture.

Thanks also for the link. It does not seem to be working but I will keep checking every couple of days. I appreciate all your help.

Cheers
