However, the easiest thing to do would be to get the birth certificate of John Robert Robinson, Dec.1867 Lincoln 7a 444.
Modified - Getting the birth certificate would not only give his father's name,

... assuming of course that there really was a William Robinson :)

Actually, there was a William ROBINSON aged 30 buried in Lincoln in 1868 - he had died in Hanley, Staffordshire.
Deaths Jun 1868
ROBINSON    William    30    Stoke T.    6b   91

and whaddayaknow - there was a William ROBINSON 23 Printer and Compoitor born Lincoln in Hanley in 1861 with wife Elizabeth 25 and son Edward J aged 1. (all born Lincoln) :D
Perhaps this couple
Marriages Jun 1859
HOLDEN    Elizabeth        Lincoln    7a   897
ROBINSON    William         Lincoln    7a   897

There was a John R ROBINSON aged 3, grandson in a BROWN household in Lincoln in 1871.

Geoff-E - that sounds a good possibility.  Alternatively-

On the 1881 census, there is a William Robinson, aged 49, married a printer born Leeds, with someone called Sarah Ann aged 21! Also married, born in Lincolnshire, who was a servant registrar in hospital service.  They are staying at 4 Valley Parade, Manningham, Yorks.

So if by any chance this is John’s father, perhaps he wasn’t deceased, just living somewhere else with someone other than the original Mrs Robinson (and a good deal younger ::).

If it should happen to be the William that I found, there is added interest as his mother was born in India (and her mother was from Luton).

Thanks for all the info I will work my way through it all and see if I can make any fit. Thanks.

I have just been looking on a different tack, looking through the marriages for a "William" guessing around 1850 to 1868  looking specifically in the district of Caistor which was Grimsby. On the records Ive found and there are quite a number, but they dont link William to any woman just shows others married at the same time, so how do I link the William to any specific woman? If I go into Grimsby regiser office will their records tell me that? and am I allowed to search them?
Appreciate any further help in this direction

You could get the Caistor Spreadsheet from here http://mi.lincolnshiremarriages.org.uk/

Don't forget to read the Caistor Instructions to find out what is (or isn't) there.
