Street Names in Rickling
« on: Friday 16 July 10 11:07 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone!

I'm a little confused or perhaps going about things the wrong way  ???

I have addresses from census returns for my ancestors in Rickling (William and Eliza Wright and their 9 children who were all born in the village).

The problem I have is that I have googled the addresses and none of them show up.  Is there a "Rickling local" out there that can tell me if road names have changed, disappeared etc?

1861 & 1871 - High Road - shoemaker
1881 - Main Road - shoemaker
1891 - Shoemakers Shop, Quendon Street
1901 - Quendon Street

My aim was to arrange a visit to the area to take photos of the streets etc but it would seem a pretty fruitless visit if none of the streets existed anymore!

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know Rickling, but I'd suggest you look at the census enumeration district descriptions on ancestry to see if there are adjacent streets that do exist to help you work out where yours were.

I've only recently found - in London - the street where my gt grandfather dropped dead in 1879.  I was misled because I found a street with the right name but it seemed a long way away, too far for my gt grandmother to have gone when she heard what had happened.  But I eventually found it was the next road down from their home, and it had changed name twice since 1879!

Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Thanks Jeuel - hadn't thought of that!

That's why this site is so good - people have different view points and ideas.

Thanks again

Good afternoon
There is a website for Rickling at www.quendonandrickling.co.uk which includes a brief history. It also includes old photos and a hand drawn map but there are not many labels to the paths/streets.
There is an email contact address too
