Shoebottom is a variant of Shufflebottom, an English habitation name from Shipperbottom  in Lancashire, which derives its name from the Old English scepwaella = a spring where sheep are washed  + boom = valley.
Other variants are Shufflebot(h)am,  Shovelbottom, Shipperbottom, Shoebotham and Shubotham. From "The Oxford Names Companion"

In the 1881 Census there are 24 people called Shoebottom, and 29 called Shoebotham.
