my ggf Bernard Courtney married Margaret Campbell and lived in Carrickmacross co.Monaghan...he was born in the 1840's in co.louth....i've found one born in Louth 1848 but i'm not sure if he is the right Bernard.

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so what you have found might be a church record of baptism? Not all church records for that period will probably survive or be listed anywhere online which makes it more difficult to know if you've found the correct record.
Bernard's marriage certificate (if under civil registration) should list his father's name. If before civil registration perhaps the church record will give further details.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
