Carters of Cox Green / Penshaw
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 21:19 BST (UK) »
I have generations of Carters coming from Penshaw but find the BT's only go back to 1762. is this because the earlier ones haven't been copied or don't they exist at all? Or do they come under another place?

I have:
Thomas Carter bap abt 1751 from death 1821 on DRO.
he was married to Isabel Wilkin of Darlington in sept 1773 Penshaw (marriage on BT's).
I have 3 children from BT's / DRo: John 1776 (my line); thomas 1780; Joseph 1783

is there any way of finding Thomas Carter 1751 parents?

TIA,
Diddy  ;D

The chapelry's earliest records are 1754.  Penshaw was part of Houghton le Spring.  I would look there they go back to 1563.

My transcript goes back to 1746.  I looked from 1750-1755 and didn't see a Thomas Carter.  There was a Carter family having children that lived in Cox Green and that was a John Carter.  see Bapt of Mary Carter 5 Feb 1749.

I looked in Washington also (but didn't see any Thomas for that time period) .  It seems depending on which side of the Wear you lived whether you would be in the parish of Penshaw area or Washington.  From Cox Green Washington may have been easier to get to than Houghton.

thanks for looking Janis. this is the death from DRO:

15 Feb 1821 Thomas Carter, of Coxgreen, age: 70

so he was living in Cox Green at the time. His son John 1776 is down as being bap Cox Green.

So you do not know that Thomas Carter was born in Cox Green, only that he was living there when he died?.  There is nothing on line that you can look at except the IGI.   IF someday you order the film for Houghton le Spring from the LDS, then look for the Mary Carter entry and you will see that there was a Carter family living in Cox Green about the time period you are looking at---if that is of any help to you.
