][/color][/b] b 1884 in Stourbridge

Phebe & Archibald emigrated to US (Weare, New Hampshire) in 1887
Philip lived with grandparents and emigrated to US (Weare, New Hampshire) in 1895

Phebe married a James Wilson Baker abt 1892
Philip & Archibald became stepsons of James and took the Baker surname (informally adopted??)

I’m trying to find out what happened to the James Rule & Phebe Drewry marriage

I’m trying to find the link in England between Phebe Rule & James Wilson Baker. He raised sheep & had a large raw wool business. He may have been in England to sell wool to fabric industry where he met Phebe.

Hi Julie,

Thanks for all of your info. Growing up my grandfather's (Archibald) background was a big dark secret. Then last year I decided to
search. I found a listing with his older brother Philip Anderson Baker linking him to "another" Baker family. I then found a listing son Philip Arthur Baker. That listing lead me to an obituary that listed Philip Arthur's daughter. I did a search on her that gave me her address and phone number. I called and then drove to New Hampshire for a visit. Her grndfather's (Philip Anderson) was also a big dark secret. We compared notes after which I got hooked and continued my search.

I have found out lots about our step great grandfather and his family. I have talked with the present owners of the property. The house was built in 1770 and included more than 1000 acres in Weare, New Hampshire. Only 4 families from 1770 til today. Samuel Caldwell (1770-1822), James Baker (1822-1902), Ernest Paige (1902-1968), Murray Wigsten (1968-present).

I'm excited by what you have found and hope that we will learn more as time goes on. THANKS again.

Photos of the house at 18 Williams Street in Brierley Hill that I believe James Rule, Phoebe Ann Rule, Philip A. Rule & Archibald G. Rule (my grand father) lived in when they were all together. 18 Is the unit on the right in the street photo. It's the unit behind the red vehicle on the right side of the aerial photo.

Does anyone know the area? I'd like to contact current residents and/or people that know the area.

THANK YOU,

Pete Baker

This post doesn't make sense to me. James Rule was born abt 1844 in Scotland. At the time of this 1901 census the individual is listed as 42. James would have been 56/57 in 1901
This may be the James Rule from the 1901 census transcribed as Bula.

Hi Pete

Have you managed to make any inroads on the Scottish roots of James Rule? If not, hopefully the marriage entry that Julie found earlier will let you confirm at least his father's name.

The only James Rule I am seeing in the earlier censuses in Scotland is in this family - the transcription is not great (the original image will hopefully be clearer) - all the children are showing as born in Glasgow:

John Rule 45 (iron) Sabourn (?spl), b. Dumpren (?spl), Dumfrieshire
Margaret A Rule 44 b. Dumpren, Dumfrieshire
James Rule 18 Grocer Amstant (assistant)
John Rule 16
George Rule 14

Address: 24 Scotland St, Tradeston, Glasgow Govan

I can't see James' birth above on the Old Parish Registers at www.familysearch.org but the two younger brothers show as children to a John Rule and a Margaret Anderson (I thought this might have a connection with the middle name of James' son Phillip):

1. JOHN RULE Birth: 07 SEP 1844 Barony, Lanark
2. GEORGE RULE Christening: 18 OCT 1846 Barony, Lanark

Only possible marriage I could see for parents was this one (fits in terms of dates but question mark given the location):

JOHN RULE and MARGARET ANDERSON
Marriage: 20 FEB 1842 in Saint Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire

This is all speculation until you are able to confirm James Rule's father's name from his marriage entry  :)
