Priscilla McCarthy
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 10:25 BST (UK) »
Keen to find out more about Priscilla who was born around 1878 and baptised on 10 Mar 1878, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

My main interest is in her husband, John Gribble.

He was a soldier, Shropshire Light Infantry (joined 1895), He married Priscilla in 1898 (Portsmouth) and had a daughter in 1899 called Cherry Marlo L (prob Lavinia, she was prob named after his female relatives).

I have located Priscilla and Cherry on the 1911 census for Portsmouth but there is no sign of John. I was initially told some years ago that he was killed during WW1 but only today discovered his WW1 Pension record. He left the army in 1913, in Melbourn Australia.

Did he stay there?
Did wife and daughter join him or were they 'abandoned?

questions, questions

Howdy, the 1911 census shows Priscilla Gribble as married though alone with daughter Cherry but the 1911 census for John Gribble as a Sergeant in the army / India & single aged 34?

there's a John Gribble listed as deseased in 1963 Victoria Australia, same person?

the burial information is from the Cemetery Burials & Memorial Inscriptions for Victoria / Ferntree Gully Cemetery Register dated 30/1/1987

might be worth trying the Geneological Society of Victoria, think the email is  gsvfhol@gsv.org.au

the record doesn't have his Christian name

did notice something curious, found a person who joined the Australian Army in 1915 born in UK, called himself George Gribble, age seemed right to fit with John Gribble, probably not connected but you just never know with this stuff, it was getting late so I stopped looking

all the best

Hi,

I've found these marriages,

Priscilla MCCARTHY    Sep Q 1911    Portsmouth    2b  1179
Richard ROBERTSON with same details.

Cherry M L ROBERTSON    Mar Q 1921    Portsouth    2b  868
Alfred WATTS

and these deaths,

Priscilla B ROBERTSON    Jun Q 1955    Portsmouth    6b  365
Age at death (estimated): 77

Cherry Marlo L WATTS    Mar Q 1977    Portsmouth    20  0727
Birth Date: 10 Feb 1898

I wonder if Priscilla thought John had died,  if he deserted her, or if she left him?

Regards,
Daisy

Fantastic - what great work!!

I am beginning to think that he stayed in Australia and as a result they all thought he had died (or said that he did)

certainly his relatives in BArrow in Furness thought he had died in WW1 (I had a letter from a niece of his) yet he left the army before the war started
