OPRs from 1700s
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 12:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been looking at some original OPRs on SP for my Niven Family and it is being spelt with a B and not a V

Did they use a B instead of a V in those days does anyone know please?

Thanks in anticipation ...

B's and V's look very similar in older handwriting - take a look at www.scottishhandwriting.com for further info, and a handy letter identifier tool - you'll be able to see how similar they look!  The first letter is a b, the second a v and the third is s...so though it looks as though Niven has been written as Niben, it will just be the style of handwriting rather than a misspelling.

Hiya westwood1

I do not have the answer to B instead of V but experienced the same with my Sibbes/Sives family OPRs in East Lothian
Sibbes 1650ish/1750ish = Sives 1760ish onwards, with the usual impossible to find variations in between.

Hi to both of you

Thank you for your helpful information; will have a look at the SP handwriting site, thanks Archivos.

Sometimes it was written with a v but the further I go back in time it seems to be written with what looks like to be a b.

Kind regards
