An Englishman who became a deputy U.S Marshall
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 10:31 BST (UK) »
My ancestor's tale is an interesting one and I hope that someone might have some suggestions as to how to undertake further research.

His name was John Taylor Baker. He was born in England in 1859 but at some point emigrated to the US.

I have not been able to identify him on a passenger list but by 1900 ( according to his death notice in 1944 ) he was already a deputy US Marshall.

He worked at Mare Island and in Alaska during the first world war.

From !930 until he died he lived in Shasta County California at a place called Schilling which no longer appears on maps and may be another name for Whiskeytown.

I know he had 2 children Harold and Alwyn.

It would be interesting to find out more about him in pricular his role as a deputy Marshall.

In the 1900 census he is a widowed farmer in Anderson Township, Shasta county, California, with sons Alwyn J born Sep 1884 in Massachusetts and Harold W born Dec 1886 in England. It says he came to the US in 1881.
