Help to find George Gowan
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 12:08 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I am trying to find out what happened to George Gowan. I found him in the 1901 census living with his mother and brother in  Nangan Wingfield Gorey Wexford .  George in the 1901 census is age 23.  I have his birth certificate but I can not find him in the 1911 census.  I know his Mother died in 1906 so that would have left George and James on  their own. Would they have had to move out of the house when their mother died. I think I found James he died 1917 but can't find any sign of George.  Any help and ideas would be great thanks

George's brother James is still living in the same townland , but on his own in 1911. His surname is transcribed as Garwan - but looks more like Gowan to me on the original form.

 see : James Garwan

The townland is actually named Mangan - it's mistranscribed on the 1901 census. If you look at the 1901 building return (form B1)  -  it's clearly the placename.

for ref : 1901 Census return for Gowan family

Hi Shane thank you so much for your reply and help I would never have found him  ;D  I wonder if George left Ireland ?  As I see that James has taken over the house and is calling himself a Farmer.  The strange thing about this family is  that George's mother and father John Gowan and Mary Gowan nee Caulfield married in 1858 but the first child I can find for them is Ellen Gowan born 1870.  I know that registration did not  start until 1864 but from 1864 -1870 I can not find any children for them. What I am trying to do is link my great grandfather to this family.  John Gowan and Mary Gowan nee Byrne they are living in the same place my great grandfather John Gowan was born abt 1859 could this be his mother and father or am I barking up the wrong tree ???

I don't know who was actually employed to transcribe the census but this is a good example of a pretty poor effort. How anyone could read 'ar' for the 'o' in the GOWAN signature is beyond me.

With the number of errors arising (compared to the UK census transcriptions) it seems it was either a rush job or individuals not too familiar with Irish names/places.
