Foley Family Wexford
« on: Friday 23 July 10 21:31 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on James Foley (stonemason & builder) who married Anne Murphy in 1816 in Wexford. Not sure where he originally came from (possibly Waterford)?? Cannot find his marriage record. I know he had a son, James (customs officer in Waterford) and son, John, (compositor with Wexford Press). James Foley's grandson, Patrick, was a very well known and respected cattle drover in Wexford. Can anyone help?

Do you know where in Co. Wexford the marriage took place ?

You will need to know the religion and parish to start a proper search.

Hi,

No don't know the parish where they were married. It would have been Roman Catholic records. I do know they lived in John's St in Wexford as James Foley is listed on the Griffith's Valuation. There was a check done on marriage records in Rowe St Church (as they hold records back to 17th Century for Parish of Wexford) and there is no record of marriage of James and Annie. I did however find baptismal records for some of their children. The genealogy centre in Tagoat, Co. Wexford is now closed and it was through this site that I found that the marriage took place in 1816 but no details of church or parish were given. James Foley was a well known stonemason and was responsible for the cutting of the stone for the "Rose Window" in the Pugin designed chapel of St. Peter's College in Wexford.

James also had another son, Edward, who was a priest in Monageer/Boolavogue.
The obituary of James' grandson James (of Mary St.) in 1933 also states there is a connection to Canon Foley of Glynn.

Did you find any info on James the stonemason? I am also researching this branch of the family
