Hi China,

The WW1 Roll of Honour for Markyate includes Horace CHALKLEY (26Oct1914) and Frederick CHALKLEY (09Nov1914).     I will search the county newspaper for possible pictures.

Hi China

I am researching the men on the Markyate War Memorial and have both Albert and James Smith, sons of Aaron and Susan Smith.  I also have Andrew C Ayres who married Minnie Loveridge.  There is a J Loveridge who could be Susan and or Minnie's brother but I cannot find him on the CWGC as yet.  I think he may have been a Parkins on the CWGC but have to verify this.

I am speaking to the local scouts tonight and Albert and James are 2 of the men I am speaking about as they lived very near the scout hut.

Regards

Anne

Hi Anne

I'm intrigued.......Where did you find the name 'Loveridge' from for Minnie? i'm pretty sure that after her birth she was registererd in Loveridge but thereafter was always known as Minnie Smith.
I don't know how much you've been able to uncover about James & Albert Smith, I've got the details of the battle in which James or as he was affectionately known 'Little Jim' died, if you haven't got this info i'll gladly email it to you, as of yet i don't know much about Alberts death, i'm pretty sure we've emailed each other before Anne, so i'll check in my address's.
I'm not sure about the J Loveridge that you mentioned, although i would say you're probably correct in saying he's related in some way to Susan, i don't know about the name 'Parkins' though,  there are 'Parkers', Susan's mother was a Parker.

Also Anne, can you tell me exactly where the Smith family lived in Markyate? i ordered a book a while back, the memoirs of a Markyate chap starting from about 1906, it has lots of pictures of the local residents and suchlike, a very nice book, ..but.. nothing in there i'm afraid on the Smiths.
