Thomas Short and family
« on: Sunday 25 July 10 18:45 BST (UK) »
Hi guys
In researching my paternal side I have discovered that Thomas Short (c1814) and his wife Mary Christie (c1812) went to America.   They married in Scotland and their first daughter, Helen was born in Scotland in 1835.  Their 2nd daughter, Margaret was born in America in 1837 (New York I think) and the 3rd daughter, Elizabeth was also born in America in 1844.

Now, I know Margaret returned to Scotland and married in 1862 but I can find no record of any of the rest of the family.  Her marraige certificate states that both her parents were dead at that time.  I think Thomas may have been an auctioneer or dealer.  Any information would be appreciated.

Helen Short born 1838 Scotland living in the household of Jahiah Parmley a Dentist.  There are 3 or 4 servants listed so I'm wondering if Hellen was working in this household.

Great!  That certainly looks like the first daughter.  Would be good to know if the Shorts stayed in America.

Through Ancestry I found Thomas and wife Mary on the same ship and also sister Margaret aged 1.  Is there any way I can find out if they came back or stayed in the States?

Well, I have just found registrations in Scotland that indicate that Thomas and Mary Ann married in New York on 7 September 1832 at Canal St Church.  There are also registrations to say that daughters Margaret and Elizabeth were born in America.  They obviously did registrations both sides of the Atlantic and must have visited home regularly.

More mystery!
