Smart & Law marriage ?
« on: Sunday 25 July 10 22:25 BST (UK) »
I have a Harriet Smart b 1849 Bedfordshire--don't know which part of the county--I found a marriage for her to a Jasper Law in the Parish of Risely November 1871. I sent for the M cert and am now uncertain if i have MY Harriet.

Her father's name was Thomas Smart [still alive at time of marriage] her age at time of marriage should be 22. [if it is a birth date i have]

Her age on cert was 25 & father's name was William.
Residence at time of marriage is shown on cert as Riseley

His residence shown as Cooknoe Northants

I can understand the age being different it may only have been her Baptism in 1849 and not birth.

The 1871 census shows a Harriet Smart [servant] b 1847 b Beds and working in Northamptonshire.

She could have met Jasper in Northants ,the birth/baptism date could be misleading but it's the father's name difference that bothers me.

The witness names are no help-don't recognise them--

Any ideas as to how i can decide if i have the correct Harriet Smart please?  :) poli [my brain is turning to slush-------

Does your Smart family from Riseley have any links with the surname Brown,as Jasper is on the 1881 census with Harriett aged 35 and born in Riseley with a niece Mary Brown aged 14.

Likely to be related to Harriett I would think.

Thanks for replying but--

Actually Carol i think i've just solved it myself!!!
Writing it all out made me recheck some details. I had another look for Harriet's birth on Ancestry and guess what--i found another Harriet Smart born Riseley 1847 with a father William---not my branch --at least not one i know of as yet.

So i'm sure now that i do indeed have the WRONG cert.

I think i need to go and lie down in a dark room  :-[ :-[ poli

Many thanks though for taking the time to reply--an embarrassed poli

14 year old Harriet can be seen on the 1861 census at RG9/ 985  Folio  6 Page  5 in Risely and with parents William and Mary.

She has various brothers and sisters and an uncle called Thomas Brown  ;)

Looking for your Harriet SMART.

There is a marriage of Richard SILVER to Harriet SMART June Quarter Ipswich 4a 840.  (FreeBMD has Richard SILVER mistranscribed as page 810, but it's wrong!)

In the 1871 census Harriet is aged 22 and born Bedford.  (RG10/1754 f86 p21).

To Carol & Steven G.

Isn't it weird how these things turn up -- My Harriet had a sister Mary who was married to a William Silver b in Wiltshire !!!!!

I have obviously got some further digging to do--thank you both for dredging up this info   ;D poli
