Confused.........
« on: Monday 26 July 10 14:05 BST (UK) »
::)I have just begun to do my tree on my side and face an undaunting time as its in Wales with the name 'Evans'. My grandfather's birth certificate says he was born in 1892 in Powell Place, Seaside, US(?) (can't read last letter) His mum was Elizabeth Evans with no father named.  I can't find a 'Powell Place' and don't know what the US- means? My grandad's name was Evan Llewellyn Evans and he married a Annie Mary Veasey in 1928 (also Llanelly). Can anyone enlighten me with the place names?

Hi Chris 71 and welcome :)

It'll be "USD" (an "Urban", as opposed to a "Rural" Sanitary District). It doesn't advance matters!

I take it you haven't been able to find him in the 1901 census as yet - is that right?

It is Llanelly, and which question were you answering? I think his mum worked as a domestic as it says 'Laundress' for her occupation. Maybe her boss was Evan's dad? (well it did happen)!! If thats so, I found 'Llanelly House' on the website but she could have worked at another house. He lived with a woman and had kids between 1919 and 1929 when she died in childbirth. Her name was Florence May DOYLE. (also in Llanelly)

just getting the basic facts before drilling into the actual question(s)

The only lad I can see that fits in 1901 with mother Elizabeth, also has a father Daniel and siblings.  This turns out to be an Evan Lewis Evans.

do you have any of your Grandads siblings names ?

Ref 'Statutory info' on the Certificate - specifically interested in the Registration Sub District of Llanelly that is named, as 'Seaside' is a mystery.

Very often women described as laundresses actually took in washing to do in their own homes, I doubt they had a boss

Thanks Rosie, that is very usefull to know. I don't know of any siblings yet. As I said, I only found out today the mum was called Elizabeth.  Its very kind of you to help me. I obviously have a lot to learn!! Can anyone explain what the 'urban' thing was as I don't know? And why put USD on a certificate?

USD or RSD is the equivalent of Urban/Rural District Council in later years - effectively just part of the address.

Can you say from the Birth Cert what the Sub Registration District of Llanelly is please?
