Has anyone heard of....
« on: Monday 26 July 10 20:42 BST (UK) »
I have just found a census listing on the 1851 census for a Michael Murphy.  He is living in Workington with his family.  They list as their place of birth as Monohoe Ireland .  Ancestry go on to list it as Monhoe.  I can't seem to find any reference to such a place although I could of course be looking in completely the wrong place!!!

Any ideas would be greatfully received.
Here is the census ref if that is any help to anyone.
Class: HO107; Piece: 2435; Folio: 151; Page: 7; GSU roll: 87115-87116.
Thank you

Claire

I looked at the census page and it definitely looks like Monahoe. There are a few strange spellings used for place names in Ireland. I presume the enumerator was having a hard time with some Irish counties and place name and was taking a bit of a guess.

 Ireland, Monohoe is used several times for different families - maybe Monaghan ?
 Lautrime = Leitrim
 Farmanah = Fermanagh

Nearby pages have Monegan, Carvan, Aramagh, and Monahoe again. Most of the Irish locations are counties, but a few are towns - e.g. Westport

If the birthplace was meant to be a county than Monaghan would be the best bet - the other M counties are Meath and Mayo.

Have you found him on any later census returns ?

Yes but thereafter it is just the standard Ireland!  They were quiet a mobile family moving between England, Scotland and Wales.  Other info  suggests that Michael Murphy, who I hope is the one on that census , marries in County Down.

Thanks
