Registration of Baptism
« on: Wednesday 28 July 10 12:17 BST (UK) »
I have an uncle who was born in the workhouse in New Ross in 1897. Could anybody
please tell me where I can apply for his Baptismal certificate.

not sure if there's anywhere to apply for a baptism cert, you would normally have to research parish records and transcribe the relevent details .. do you know his religion ?

You could search for the references required to order a civil cert from the GRO. See : Introduction to Irish Records

Thank you Shane for replying so quickly.
I have his birth certificate. I applied to the church and they have no record of his Baptism.
He was R.C. It  was suggested to me not by the Church  that although it states a place of birth that place could have been where his father was living at the time.
I was hoping somebody would know where the Baptismal records for the workhouse are lodged.

Surely any baptism (if there was one) would be recorded in a church register? The workhouse would not be a religious institution, and would not conduct or record baptisms, I would have thought. (And the birth itself was obviously recorded in the statutory records).

It might be worth checking what parish churches there are in and around New Ross town to see if there's more than one.

Which parish church did you try already ?

p.s. dont understand what you mean about 'place of birth' comment...on a civil cert that means where the birth took place, the father's residence is listed in a separate section of the form.

Shane,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have contacted the Catholic presbtyery at New Ross
so hopefully they may come up with something.
Elwyn thinks he would not have been baptised in the workhouse, but surely an
institution housing so many catholics must have had a chapel. I can't imagine all the
occupants going off to a church on a Sunday in New Ross.
Perhaps somebody might know .

I think even if the workhouse had a priest or chapel, or one visited, the records would have been recorded in the appropriate parish records. i.e. in the local parish church.

what extra details are you hoping to find on a baptism ? These are generally less detailed than civil birth certs.

I suppose I'm hoping to get sponsors names but realistically it would probably
have been a member of staff I expect. I'm just trying to get as much information as
possible about him especially as he had such a bad start in life.

You can google "workhouse births" for Wexford. It gives details of child's date of birth, child's name, child's given surname and surname which child will take. It also gives details of parents and if child was "illegitimate" or not. It will give sponsors names also and where mother came from before entering the workhouse. I know for definite that workhouse for Wexford Town Union is on the internet so perhaps it is same for New Ross. Have you tried contacting the archivist at Wexford Library? The library will hold records of all the workhouses throughout the county of Wexford.
