Geiger - From Darlington to Canada
« on: Friday 01 April 05 21:44 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help? I know that my Nan Daphne Kathlyn Geiger (nee Jolly) travelled out by ship from the UK to Canada in either 1945 or 1946. She had with her, her son Peter James Geiger. They were going out to join my Grandad Roy James Geiger who went out ahead to set up a farm in Douglas, Brandon, Manitoba. Both my Granparents served, and met, in the Forces, my Grandad was with the Canadian Services, my Nan was a plane spotter.
I have details of some of the Geigers, Roy's dad John Geiger married a Minnie Currie and they had five children, including Roy.
Any hints would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Jools :D
Canada - Geiger, Currie
Edmonton - Sanders,
Yorkshire - Dean,
Yorshire - Jolly

Dear Jools...
I can't help you with the names you are seeking, but the last name is still used in Brandon, Manitoba, and also some here in Winnipeg...
I will p.m. the Brandon addresses to you....and you can start there!
The very best of luck with your search!  J.J.

Jools,

It should be possible to search the index of the Brandon Municipal Cemetery but it won't work for me:
http://www.city.brandon.mb.ca/welcome.nsf/(SearchTitles)/3F0869D5F501D93986256C4F0066564D

If it won't work for you, either, you could contact them via the City of Brandon website:

Hi jools!
Hopefully you are going down the right path...by contacting the Brandon
Geiger families, as I contacted the Winnipeg ones by phone ( couldn't get hold of one) and they are not your family...too new, and some are from Ontario.
Plus Brandon is closer to Douglas...( I found it on a map list, but not on the actual map)
According to the 1881 census there were no Geigers in Manitoba yet....although
Ontario was full of them!  Manitoba was slower to populate, as people going
west either kept going or turned back! Just kidding. It does get viciously cold here some winters, though. Only the toughies remain. ( or are we just daft???)  J.J.

I'll just add that I learned in the last year or so that many folks (including some of my husband's ancestors) went from Ontario to Manitoba in the 1800s.  My husband's Trotter family (originally from Ireland) moved from Ontario in the late 1870s and eventually settled in Brandon, Manitoba, although they lived in a few different places along the way.  We only know this because my husband's great-great-grandfather's cousin wrote a book.  And then a lot of people moved from Manitoba to North Dakota, it seems.  I think the Ontario GenWeb site has some information about that.

Josephine

If the earlier name does end up checking out then this may be the next gen.
But you will need to find more information to verify any of this...the 1911
should help a bit...as long as it is searchable by surname.
