family historian 3.
« on: Sunday 01 August 10 16:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,i purchased fh 3 a couple of years ago and installed it on my daughters computer all fine.
then her computer died and was revived later.went to open my fh file and it seems the grandson had deleted it!!!!  :o horror's.The thing is i had mislaid the registration key, been in contact with calico the makers of FH.all i wanted was my registration number, they would not give it me,they just keep telling me to buy a new one.I sent them copies of cd and purchase receipt which they asked for, thought they would have sent my number once i'd given them proof of purchase. So does anybody have any hints that might enable me to bypass the reg number thing please. No i'm not a tight fisted old git,it's the principle.regards irishistory.

You might have some luck with running LicenseCrawler over the machine. It searches through everything and finds what serial numbers it can.

Thank you Macbeth,i will certainly try that and hope it works.I could have bought a new one but i was originally hoping for a gesture of goodwill from F.Historian(calico pie)as i had sent them my right of ownership!! Sorry, they make me want to rant!!
          thanks again Macbeth.

Why?  They are in business to make money, not to give away free updates to anyone who has "lost" their original version.

On the other hand, a goodwill gesture is often good business practice. I would certainly think twice about dealing with such a firm after reading the above post.

Recommendation by satisfied customers is cheap advertising.

I think it's really strange that they won't accept proof of purchase as err ... proof of you having purchased it.

I'm sure it's a big problem for software companies, but if you can prove you've got the installation CD and have proof of purchase, then it seems to show a singular lack of goodwill.  After all you're not asking for a free upgrade, just to be able to use what you've already bought.

Your frustration is understandable, but please don't ask anyone to help you do something to "bypass the reg number."  If the publishers were to become aware of your request, they may not take kindly either to you or RootsChat for allowing such a request to pass without comment.

Thanks.

Nell

Hi Little nell, sorry, maybe bypass was the wrong  terminology! :-[I was not looking for anything illegal,a reg key is just electronic numbers, they asked me for ownership,i gave it to them??i gave them more proof than they asked for and still recieved  a rebuff!Never once did i ask them for a free upgrade Lizzie, just a little goodwill!!!It was an honest errorr and things can get mislaid or lost,i am only human after all,and a little goodwill goes a long way.It would have gone on here!!!!
