Hi Phil

You do not say what area you would expect their marriage to have taken place?

Do you have any idea of Elizabeth's maiden name - from child's birth cert, for example?

Are you thinking this is pre-1837 and hence needing a parish look-up?  The date of their first child's birth may give a clue to this - but is not always reliable!

Pretty tricky to tackle without this information!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks Arronroots. Both Elizabeth aged 59 and George 60 in the 1871 Wales census were born in Poulton(Paulton) Somerset. Also children Elizabeth and Joseph show up but they were born in Monmouth so i Would think the marriage took place in Somerset otherwise why did they both go to wales,Phil.

Hi Phil

I have checked freebmd (as I'm sure you did before posting).  There is a possible marriage for George in Bath, 11 42, Dec 1842 with an Elizabeth CARRADINE.

I'm not sure, but I don't think Bath is the nearest reg district to Paulton - maybe Clutton?

I still think you need one of the children's birth certs to confirm Elizabeth's maiden name.  This will confirm the marriage when you find it.  Post specifically for a parish or BVRI look-up if that is what you need (i.e. took place before 1837)

There is probably no point considering marriages after 1850, which is the date of birth of the oldest child on the 1871 census, by which time they were in Wales.  There are a number of GREGORYs who could be George and Elizabeth's children, living nearby in 1871 but born Paulton.

I would be inclined to ask for an 1851 & 1861 look-up in Monmouthshire, plus 1841 in both counties.  Sometimes you can catch an in-law visiting which helps confirm maiden names!  Sorry I am not able to help with these early censuses.

kind regards,

Arranroots  ;)

I found a marriage of a george in 1848 in Axbridge. I dont know where this is in relation to Paulton but there was only Georges name on the register. I couldnt scroll accross to find who he married. Cheers,Phil.

Hi Phil

By a process of elimination, the marriage you mention is likely to have been with Elizabeth COX or Elizabeth COOK .  Found this by comparing the incomplete page number for George with the known page numbers of any Elizabeths marrying in Axbridge in the same quarter.

Looking again at the 1871 census there are various GREGORY families in the Trevethin area.  These could be the children of George and Elizabeth, born either in Somerset or locally.

William 30 b Cwmffrwdoer, Trevethin
Benjamin 37 b Potton, Somerset
Tom 32 b Somerset

There are 2 others, too old to be their children (52 & 47), but born Paulton so poss connected.

Try posting again for look-ups - here and in Monmouthshire.  Let me know if I can help and I'll keep thinking!!

There is a marriage of a George Gregory in Clutton Dec qtr 1840  and one of the possible spouses is an Elizabeth Bridge.

I believe Clutton is very near to Paulton.

There are also several Gregory births in Clutton between 1840/50.

Just to let you know the name Gregory is extremely Profuse in Paulton. In the 1851 census there are just so many Gregory Families. The parish is litterally full of them  but alas no George and Elizabeth. There are no Gregory's at all in Cluton in 1951 so perhaps they had moved on to Wales by this time...All the Best....Kris  :D
