Have you looked for his marriage record ?

It might be an idea to try to find out his father's name to confirm or rule out any baptisms you find in Sligo.

The pay-website of Irish Family History Foundation at www.irish-roots.ie includes a section for some Church of Ireland and Catholic parish records for Co. Sligo, but note that they may not have records for all surviving parishes, and records for some parishes do not cover back as far as the 1830s. see : Sligo Sources (IFHF)

Free BMD website lists Charles Rooney m.Oct./Dec.1849 Stockport volume 19 page 318 and Catherine Martin is on the same page. English marriage certificates list name and occupation of fathers.
