James TURNER - Silk Mercer and Traveller
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 07:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down my Great Great Grandfather James Turner who was born in Norfolk in 1820 and then seemed to have disappeared after the birth of his last child in 1854 in Gloucestershire. He was listed as a Silk Mercer when he was married in 1848 but at the birth of his last child, Alice, he was a Traveller.

He married Eliza Smith in Millbrook, Hampshire in 1848 then had the following children :

1. William Joseph born in S.Stoneham, Hamshire in 1850
2. James smith Turner born in S.Stoneham, Hampshire in 1851
3. Ellen Mary Turner born in 1852/3 in London
4. Alice Turner born in 1854 in Gloucester

The children were boarded with other families and at schools at a very young age and Eliza seemed to be staying with family and/or friends in each different census year.

After that he seemed to disappear and in 1867 his wife Eliza married again to an Horatio Woodford.
The family story goes that he was seen at his Daughterr Ellen's wedding in 1883 and that Eliza never spoke to Ellen after that day. Eliza died in 1921.

I hope that someone can help me with some suggestions of where to look etc.

Thank you,
Christmack
