Irish Place Names - Completed
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 09:29 BST (UK) »
On the transcript of the death certificate of Francis MURRAY (DOD 14/05/1913, Bowraville, NSW, Aus) it is stated he was born in INNES KILLEN, Ireland c.1854,parents were Francis Murray and Mary Barry. He was married in ILKEY, Ireland c.1879 to Elizabeth Thompson.
I can not find either of these places on google maps. Are these old place names or have been transcribed incorrectly. Also, how would I find either of the marriage or birth index  to allow me to order a certificate.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Jack

"Innes Killen" should be Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh.

There is a Francis Murray (aged 107) in 1911 census in Derrylea, Co. Fermanagh-

In 1901 census he's only 89 years old-

Looks like his death- Jan/Mar.1914 Lisnaskea registration district volume 3 page 130 (age 113). Unfortunately Irish death certificates contain little detail but there might have been a mention of his death in local papers since he was so old.
Not saying that this Francis, whateveer his age, is the father of your Francis but you might want to keep him in mind in case there is a connection.

The marriage should appear in the civil index but needs to be checked by bride and then groom and then results cross-checked for a match. The index will list registration district which might help us figure out what "ILKEY" really is.
Any idea of Francis' occupation and his father's?
Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Francis and you'll need to check church records once you have a location.
I should also add that the details on the death certificate may not be 100% accurate - Enniskillen may mean the general area rather than the town itself.

Hi aghadowey.
Thank you for this information. No doubt the place names were written down and spelt as they sounded.
Curiously, the informant on the death certificate was John O'Donnell, Nephew , perhaps the son of Francis'  sister  and not the wife who was still alive at the time of death.
Both Francis' occupations are listed as farmers.
Kind Regards

Jack

John O'Donnell is the son of John O'Donnell and Rose Murray born 1866 Macleary River NSW which is in the same area as Bowraville NSW which indicates Rose was Francis' sister.
I have ordered a transcription of Jane Murray's birth certificate, who is one of Francis' daughters, which will hopefully show more details of her parents origins.

The Transcription of Birth Certificate of Jane Murray states  Francis and Elizabeth were married at Midland Lodge, Ilkey,(West Yorkeshire) England.
Francis was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland and Elizabeth nee Thompson was born in Bernley, England
Bernley I believe to be either Burley in Wharfedale or Burnley. Both are in the vicinity of Ilkley.
So the puzzle of these place names names has been solved.
THANK YOU Aghadowey for your assistance.
