Lambeth Old Workhouse, Inmate Balfry
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 10:34 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone who would be willing to consult the London Metropolitan Archives records on Lambeth Old Workhouse, Princes Rd.?

I am looking for info on William Balfry. He is listed in the 1881 Census as an inmate , aged 64, occupation Land Surveyor. I would like to know when and why he was admitted, and when he was discharged or died plus anything else that may be on record.

I have tracked down the workhouse records. They are catalogued under LABG, and possible volumes might be LABG 162/8 (1878 to 1881) and 162/9 (1881 to 1883).

Any info that anyone might dig up would be most gratefully received.

Hi jaybeedee

Unfortunately there are many requests on the London and Middlesex board for lookups but very few if any at present offers to do the lookups. In case anyone doesn't offer, Ancestry does have some workhouse records (unindexed) online - so it is a lengthy and time consuming activity to trawl through them

You can get a two week free trial to Ancestry, but also many people gain access through the Ancestry Library edition.

There is an out of date list of the libraries that used to subscribe. If you are a member it gives you free internet access.

Thanks Valda for the quick response. The lookup situation appears to be much as I expected. However fingers crossed...

I will try Ancestry Library Edition via my local city library (Liverpool) I know they used to have access.

In the meantime here's hoping!

Hi

Just records ending on Ancestry not records ending....

'London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, London EC1R OHB.
◦Princes Road workhouse holdings include: Admissions and discharges (1773-1919); Creed registers (1850-1919); Births (1836-68); Baptisms (1803-60).
◦Renfrew Road workhouse holdings include: Admissions and discharges (1912-22); Creed registers (1873-1922); Births (1875-1916); etc.'

From the workhouse website

Then again I checked the Ancestry website and the Discharge Register from the Primces Road Workhouse dates between 1868-1919 and the Creed Register 1850-1919
