DCM recipient
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 15:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

My great grandfather CHARLES HENRY RICHMOND appears on his son's marriage certificate with the initials DCM after his name. I know this means he got a medal of some kind and that anyoe who recieved a medal got their name in the London Gazette. Is this correct?

Is there anyone who would be able to help me confirm that my great grandfather did recieve a medal?

Kind regards

Emma

It would be WW1 I would imagine. His son got married in 1922 so it must have been before this.

There are several possibilities listed in the London Gazette, but none seems to have the exact three names, as is quite normal. - usually only one forename is given and there a number of Charleses.  The Gazette published citations for these awards which were awarded for gallant actions, just below the level of a VC.
If you look at the Great War Forum and post there, they have a contributor who seems to have a list of DCM winners and may be able to help [Apologies to anyone on THIS Forum who has the same source!]

Another source is the Medal Index Cards available via Ancestry or the National Archives online.  Anc.. have the cards for campaign medals, but I think you have to look in the NA for DCMs, as they are usually on separate cards.
Worth pursuing!

What area would he have been living in? could it be warwickshire?

NA doesnt have an exact match for CH Richmond however it may just be C Richmond.

Hi Emma

He is not listed in the awards up to 1909, so it it likely to be for WW1.

When searching the London Gazette for gallantry awards you will find that the title of the award - Distinguished Conduct Medal - is only used at the start of the section. For other names you need to search for conspicious plus his name. This word appears in all the citations for the DCM.

It is also used in citations for the DSO. So if you find yourself in a section of officers rather than Other Ranks, these will be DSO winners.
