Occupation
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 21:47 BST (UK) »
I have just found one of my ancestors in the 1861 Census and he gives his occupation as a Druggist's Pressman.  Can anyone enlighten me as to what this occupation would entail.  I have never heard it before.

Possibly responsible for making pills and tablets, Line70dancer?

Hand operated presses were often used for this task.

Thank you for those suggestions.  That makes a lot more sense.

A druggist which was the old name for a pharmacist prepared many of his medicines from natural ingredients.  He would thus frequently press oils from seeds and the liquid from other materials after heating them.

A pressman would thus operate the press to carry this out.
