de Goldington family
« on: Sunday 08 August 10 20:43 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I've seen internet info mentioning a  'William de Goldington' born in  Goldington, Bedfordshire. Does anyone know anything of this family? I understand that the father may have been Wigain de Goldington. Also, were they of proven Norman origins?
I've seen records in Cumbria showing a de Goldington family living in the north west in 1325, & am wondering if they all connect? An Adam Armstrang is a witness to a document concerning the de Goldingtons in that year.   A lot of Cumbria's Norman families arrived in the north via Lincs, so wondered if the de Goldingtons followed the Beds-Lincs-Cumbria route?
Cheers,
Bob
PS I've posted something similar on the Cumbria Board, & a lady there tells me a de Goldington wed a Skelton - Skeltons being numerous in that county. Adam Armstrang was a Rector of Skelton, Cumberland in 1369!

There are no de Goldington pedigrees in either Beds or Bucks Visitations.

If you search against Goldington at http://groups.google.co.uk/group/soc.genealogy.medieval/topics?lnk=rgh there are a number of references to de Goldingtons from Stoke Goldington, Bucks, but none for a de Goldington family from Goldington Beds. However VCH Beds at http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42415 does mention them.

Thanks David.
Do you happen to know if there is any connection between the Beds & Bucks Goldington, ie where they founded by the same family,or just a coincidence?
Cheers,
Bob

I did some research a while ago regarding Ivo(r) Taillebois & his Norman-Lincs-Cumbria connections. The Taillebois family held Goldington, Beds from the Bishop of Lincoln (Domesday ref). He re-established a Priory in Lincs, so perhaps there was traffic between Cumbria & Beds in the 13th & 14th C. THe earliest Armstrongs were Clerks at Wetheral & Lanercost priories, & some were Verderers.
Cheers,
Bob
