MISSING Benjamin Burnett 1891
« on: Monday 09 August 10 14:04 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find my G Granfather Benjamin Burnett on the 1891 census with no joy, after a few months looking, I'm hoping someone with more experience can check/ advise if he really is missing.

I have his birth Jul 1/4 1872,
His marriage to Ellen Boswell  1896
His death Apr 1951,
Also all other census returns and even his Battalion war dairies for the Great War (thanks to expert help)

In fact everything but his shoe size, but not 1891 census return.
In 1881 he was living with his father Wallace as a boarder, Benjamin was 9 years old
His father died, (mum already dead) in 1885, I have checked the boarding address, he is not there, although his older brother now is (James) he is missing on the 1881 census.
I have checked census returns for family in Salford, Oldham and Yorkshire, Benjamin is not with them, also Industrial schools, and now have run out of options.
Sorry this is long winded, and I hope not too confusing, but needed to ensure it was clear all the information I have, so not to waste anyones time.
Many thanks in advance

Is the marriage Oct/Nov/DEc 1895, Salford?

Have you got the cert? If so what was his occupation then, and address.

Also where was he born?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks for the reply Lizbd, you are correct the marriage was December 1895 ref 8d 158, sorry I put 1896.
I do not have the cert as I have traced directly back from people I remember, as Benjamin is missing on 1891 census I have no address,
In 1901 he was living at 18, Windsor st M/cr he was a cotton skein dyer, FindMyPast RG13 Piece 3756 Folio 9 page 9
1881 boarder at 5, Sandywell st Salford, age 9 with father Wallace FindMyPast RG11 Piece 3963 Folio 92 Page 47
I have a sub to Ancestry and checked on that site, I have seen the Butcher but my rellie  seemed all his life to work in the cotton industry, 1911, a cotton dyer, 1925 ( from sons marriage cert needed for the spouse's parents)he was still in the same industry.) I know that really is no proof , also looking at the original census for Brundrit it seems clearly written, again no proof, as could he read??
I would appreciate your thoughts as to the Butcher, I suppose he could have changed proffession, I have often enough

Hi

This could possibly be Benjamin, transcribed as Bingham Burnett

Hi evie, yes he was my first guess, the occupation is about right but I am concerned that the original clearly seems to say Bingham, again as I said to lizdb it's possible he had trouble reading or writing??? it made no difference however in the trenches of the Somme!!!

I am pleased to see more experienced people are looking at the same names as possibles, just shows I am learning :)

I do not know how to be sure, I only like to add when I have proof, I suspect this will be a problem.

I tried looking to see if there was a Bingham Burnett in 1881 but no-one showed. Then I got called away,  I meant to look for a birth as well. I'll look shortly unless you manage to find one in the meantime :)

I have checked the 1881 census no Bingham, to be truthful I never thought of that until you suggested it ???
I should have done that,I do know to eliminate people, but obviously having a dim moment, well for a couple months, so after WDYTYA I will check more IE other census returns and BMD's
Thanks a million

It must have been quite a common mis transcription/spelling as the other Bingham that was showing was a Benjamin Burton, transcribed as Bingham. To confuse matters both boys were born Salford, however Benjamin Burton was a few years older than your Benjamin.
