Stanton-by-Dale
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 12:45 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Smith family who lived at Stanton-by-Dale.
I would like some help in identifying where they lived.
On the 1841 census they lived next door but one to THE WHITE HOUSE, Stanton (John Smedley lived there)
On the 1851 census their address is given as MACHINE HOUSE, Stanton-by-Dale - this must still be in the same area as the neighbour is given again as John Smedley White House.
On the 1861 census Richard Smith is a coal wharf labourer and the address is JUNCTION LOCK, Stanton-by-Dale.
next door is GATE HOUSE (Sprigs-Station Master) and Seven Oaks Inn (Shipley-publican) The Smedley's are still their neighbours.
Yesterday I walked the canal and found that the present Stanton Lock no.65 was previously called White House Junction Lock and that White House Junction is at the junction with the abandoned Nutbrook Canal.  I could find no evidence of any houses there.
I would be very interested in finding out more about the history of the area, especially any old maps showing the above properties.
Thank you.

There are old map portions free to view and then purchase here...perhaps some of them may show bldgs. before they were demolished
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

This site talks about the buildings that were there...Maybe they'd know if anyone had photos from before they were demolished

Hi,

I was just wondering whether these Smedleys and Smiths are the same ones where Fred Smedley married Betsey Smith?

I've also been trying to find more information about the addresses listed on the censuses for this area but nobody seems to know where these addresses were so I'm wondering if Stanton by Dale included somewhere else that is classed as another village now. We have so many relatives from Stanton by Dale but when we went to the cemetery there we only found one person we were related to which is rather odd!
