Marjory Reekie Hatchett m.s. Crawford (1907-1941)
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I’m trying to locate the grave – possibly with a photograph - of my late Aunt, Marjory Reekie Hatchett m.s. Crawford who was born at Dunbarney, Perthshire, Scotland on 27th April 1907 and died at Park Farm, Little Horkesley, Colchester, Essex on 1st February 1941 from Acute Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Marjory, my late Dad’s twin sister, married Frederick Ernest Hatchett at High Wych Parish Church, Bishops Stortford on 14th December 1938 - much against the wishes of her dominant mother (I’m given to understand) and which resulted in her being ostracised from the family.  Frederick was born about 1901 but I have no more information about him. There were no children from the marriage.

I feel sure someone can help me here :)

Regards

I can't help you very much except to say
Frederick Ernest Hatchett was born 29/07/1901 in Royston and died Sept qtr 1972 Colchester

If Margery died in Little Horksley I think I would look in the local churchyard, if not there is a large cemetery/crematorium in Colchester

Little Horksley records are held at the Essex Record Office, St Peter and St Paul's records for burials up to 1995 are held there

Thanks Louisa Maud

As I live in East Central Scotland it's not the easiest thing to do to get to the Essex County Records Office  :-[ but I'll do a bit of 'Googling' and see what happens.

Fife Council have a 'Bereavement Service' and the staff there are more than happy to give details of burials, cremations, etc., free of charge!

If anyone else is reading my post and has information - no matter how insignificant it may seem - I'd still be pleased to receive it!

Hi Louisa Maud

I've tried first, but in vain, to get a result from various local churches with burial grounds - having been passed names of contacts for each - and have, this evening, contacted the address of Colchester Cemetery and Crematorium that you gave in your last post.

Surely there must be a record somewhere?

Hello Chiadh,

Just a little something on your enquiry, you say threy were married at High Wych Bishops Stortford, no real relavance but High Wych is literally up the road from Harlow, Bishops Stortford is a little further away, just up by Stansted Airport, but I understand your search is really for a burial, I assume that you've checked Little & Great Horksly churches ?? although both are in the Colchester area, they're something of a walk from Colchester !!

Hi Boblima and Louisa Maud

Thanks both for your interest in my search.

I have checked with the vicars at both Little and Great Horkesley but with no luck.  Colchester Cemetery and Crematorium replied late this afternoon - again with a negative result - but did refer me to the Ipswich Crematorium to determine if they may be able to help me.  Colchester Crematorium didn’t open until 1957 and Chelmsford in 1961, so most of the local deceased at that time would have been taken to Ipswich for cremation.  I've emailed them this evening and will await their response.

Aunt Marjory died almost four years before I was even born!

Infuriating  >:(  but this is looking like one of these mysteries that will remain just such!
