Stage Coachmen Hertfordshire/London
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 21:42 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I've discovered that my ancestors were Stage Coachmen in the early to mid 1800's and they lived in Hertfordshire (Carter surname).  One in particular was called Valentine Carter and was stated in the 1841 census as being a Coach Proprietor and although born and died in Hertfordshire was living in London at this time.  Another one of his brothers was listed as a coach painter.

Does anybody know if being a Coach Proprietor meant that they owned a coach company?

If anybody has any information on this occupation then I would be grateful to hear about it.

Kind regards

Lisa

A coach proprietor hired out horse drawn vehicles, and may drive the vehicle himself, he could also carry out the duties of a livery stable manager.
