Capt William Roberts Greeves - Master Mariner
« on: Sunday 15 August 10 15:54 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me if mariners at sea were accounted for in any way at time of census.  I know they were counted if in port.

My GG grandfather Capt WR Greeves was - I believe - captain of the Howrah, an emmigrant ship taking passengers to New Zealand on at least 3 occasions that I know of.

Does anyone know how I could find further info about him or his ships?
All I know is:
b 26 Mar 1835 Gorleston with Southtown, Great Yarmouth
Married Mary Ann Dyer 12 Jun 1860 Great Yarmouth St Nicholas
d 1894 Norwich.
Although his family are in Yarmouth in all census, he only appears in 1841 and 1881, so looks as if he was usually at sea.

Should be grateful for any help.

Only members of the Royal Navy were counted on census returns whilst at sea

Delighted to hear from another descendant.  I didn't know I had a relative in Leicestershire.

Will send you a personal message.

Hi Nell,
I only signed up today so I have not worked out how to reply to your message yet. Bit of a technophobe!
My G.G. Grandfather was Captain William Roberts Greeves. My decendant was George Dyer, Williams brother. I have the info re trips tp N.Z. but little more.
Great to virtually meet you.
