John Newton
« on: Monday 16 August 10 00:36 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on John Newton who was on council in Staffordshire from 1896 to 1916 when I presume he passed away. I would be interested in any family he may have had, in particular a son who may have come to Canada.

Thank You,

papanewt

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Can you tell us when and where John was born as there are 35 entries on the 1901 for Staffs for that surname

Do you know his wife's name or his son's name

Is this his death

Hi Carole

I'm guessing that is his death date. He may have had a son named John as well. I would like to know if maybe there was an Ivery Newton as well. I don't know of a wife's name.

thanks again

Hi

Unfortunately, with so little info, it would be difficult for us to pinpoint the right entry.  You need to tell us everything you have

How do you know he was on the council between those dates?

There is nothing for an Ivery Newton - are you sure you have the right christian name.  Male or female?

Where did you get the name from?

Hello again;

I don't have much to go on as there was a break between my grandfather and his father. I am guessing that my grandfather may have come to
canada as a remittance man. His father was president of the the Wolstanton bowling club between 1880 and 1905 as I have a walking stick with that engraved on it. I was told that he was a partner in a foundry that produced ships propellors. That's about all I have.

thanks for your help so far

This could well be him in 1901 from the info you have given above re: a foundry

President of a Bowling club would be more of a leisure activity so would not show on the census under occupation - see what you think of this entry

Woodlands Parade - Wolstanton

John Newton 57 b Oldham Lancashire - brass founder (employer)
Mary J   48 b Tunstall Staffs
George F B  30 brassfounders manager b Tunstall
Albert Henry   28 potters modeller b Tunstall
Edith M  16 b Wolstanton

plus servants
Margaret A Muston 25
Agnes B Busby 18
RG13 Piece 2585 Folio 122 Page 15

EDIT

I do not think this is the right family as I have tracked back to 1871 when John was married to his first wife Maria and there is no son John

Hi Carole

Could be right as I was never given my Grandfathers first name. As i said he could have been pushed aside and either went to Canada or was sent for whatever reason, there is a bit of strangeness happening there. There was little said about him. I was told he drowned in Narrow lake Sask. but I can find no record of such. After that my Grandmother took my father and his brother and sister to Glasgow.
That was in 1923 or 24.

Thanks again

Henry Newton
