William Robinson b. abt 1733, Wiston
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 22:16 BST (UK) »
I have hit a dead end and am looking for any help. My 4th Great-grandfather was William Robinson. the only info I have is:

1) A memorial plaque in the parish church of Egham, Surrey, to his son, James Robinson, states James was the 2nd son of William Robinson of West Grinstead.

2) The Church of St George, W. Grinstead, burial record of William Robinson, 12 Jan 1822, that has a notation, "from Wiston". He is buried with his wife Elizabeth who died 07 Mar, 1808, and buried 15 Mar 1808.

His second son, James, my 3rd Great-grandfather, was baptized, 6 Oct 1765, in W. Grinstead. I have not be able to find any "first son", or other children.

I do not know Elizabeth's last name, of have any marriage information.

I have not been able to find any birth information on William. ("from Wiston.")

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jeffery C Van Ness

Hi Jeffery
Think I might have found your Williams marriage.  I could only find one marriage around the right time in Surrey.
William Robinson married Elizabeth Hammond on 21st February 1761.
Doesnt state what church.

Then a possible Christening of a William Robinson 16th October 1737 at Richmond Surrey, his Father also a William.

I have looked on the map for West Grinstead and Wiston. They are not
that far apart only a few miles, so the Church or registration town could have been West Grinstead and they lived in Wiston which was a small village.

Its hard finding information so far in the past but you could try FamilySearchRecord which is a free site. It takes awhile to search through it but I have found quite a few of my ancestors on it.

Hope this is of some help to you and I am sure someone else would come on to confirm if  I am correct or not.

Good hunting

Hello Jeffery

It's possible that the registers for Wiston are still in use, it's such a tiny Parish.  It might  be worth a look at the close neighbours Washington and Ashington....I'd say Buncton as well but again the registers are probably still with the Church :(

Wiston registers are deposited at Chichester Record Office and they are also on the IGI 1570 - 1876.
