Hospital records
« on: Friday 20 August 10 23:49 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This is a long shot, but you never know.

My great uncle Private John Loughlin is buried in Terlincthun Cemetery having died on the 24th July 1918.

I know unfortunatly that his army records are some of the many destroyed.

However I did read once that Terlincthun Cemertery held quite a few men who had been in a nearby hospital. I don't think this hospital had a name, possibly just a makeshift place for treating the many wounded who came back from the frontline.
Does any know of any possible records that survive of WW1 hospitals???

I'll leave it there because if theres nothing doing then my hunch will be over.

Thanks

Jonathan

Some of the background to the establishment of this cemetery is given on the CWGC website.  Might be worth getting his death certificate to see if it gives a location for death.  Such certificates are often not very informative but cannot be discounted and a death in a hospital might be better recorded.  Recently there was an example where such a certificate revealed the cause of death to be drowning rather than enemy action or illness.

Jonathan,

I agree with Imber. As he died of wounds and Terlincthun served the base hospitals, there is a better chance of the DC being more informative than usual.

This is the link to the CWGC page for Terlincthun:

This link to Sue Light's Scarletfinders page on Medical Records will give you an idea of what is, or isn't available:

Hi

This website also gives information on the hospitals and clearing stations but not on records

I thought it was a long shot...

What do you mean by 'death certifcate'? - Surely he doesn't have one, having died in France.

Jonathan,

He will still have a death certificate.
It's just a question of finding the GRO reference.

I believe Findmypast have the indices.

This is the info from the GRO:

Hi

Findmypast General Registry Office  army death indexes

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/OverseasStartSearchServlet?mode=A&searchType=D

Familyrelatives also have the indexes

http://www.familyrelatives.com/search/search_wwiarmy.php

I believe it might be possible to search the GRO overseas registers (which include the army registers) for free at Familyrelatives

Hi,

Well you live and learn.

I seached familyrelatives using his number (130382) and found his record. Need to pay to view it.
What would I get to see for my money???

Also would I see the same record on findmypast? and if so are these free trials able to got out? - They say they are free trials but they still take your card details and then get you that way.

Thanks
