Gibert Michel, 1205
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 08:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the Curia Regis Rolls of Northumberland, 1199 - 1216 during the reign of King John. Aside from the National Archives, Kew, is there anywhere else I can search to locate information on Gilbert Michell???
I really need to just be pointed in the right direction, and please don't tell me to visit local registry offices in Northumberland as I live in Australia.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Diane

 Diane,

 I don't think anyone would have told you to visit "local registry offices" in Northumberland !. Register Offices administered/administer  the registration of births, marriages and deaths, which did not start in England and Wales until 1837.

The Northumberland County Record Office might be able to help,
www.experiencewoodhorn.com    for details and contact info.

I myself have never researched such an early era. But the multi-volumed History of Northumberland contain pedigrees of nobilty and gentry from early times. I will have a browse there for your target.

Which part of Northumberland for Gilbert Michell    ?

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your reply and offer of help.
It's looking like Gilbert Michel may be in the Newton or Alwinton area and possibly associated with Fitz-Rogeis' Rolhbury Lordship. I am not a 100%
on this, and only about 60% sure he is related.
All the best,
Diane

Hi Glen,
Thank you for your reply.
I did google Gilbert and the only hits I got  were ones
saying he is the first written record of the Michel, Michell,
Mitchell name.
Your time and effort is appreciated,
Diane

 Diane,

 "History of Northumberland Volume XV ( includes Alwinton Parish)"
Nothing on Gilbert Michel.

 Umfraville family lords of the manor in C12/13th.

Page 405. " Gilbert the son and successor of Gilbert de Unfraville, in 1274 arrested Ranulf the nephew of Roger, vicar of Alwinton, for poaching in in his forest .   "

Volume I  (page 220) covers Bamburgh Parish (which contained one of the several communities in Northumberland called Newton)
 " Adderstone, called Herdiston in the Subsidy Rolls of 1296 was the p[arent house of the great family of Forster. It was held of William de Vesci in 1289, along with Charlton by Ralph Fitz Roger for one knight's fee "

~~~~~~~~-----------
" Curia Regis and Assize Rolls. Northumberland , Vol II 1198-1272.
 In the disputes in 1205, there is a copy of some document but many words are missing as if it was difficult to read. The word "Michel" appears in isolation of other words.
Hi Michael,
Thank you very much for your efforts on my behalf. Its greatly appreciated.
Its not the first time I've hit a wall and I'm sure it won't be the last. All is not lost since you did find reference for a Michel.
Its just time to rethink and come up with a new plan of attack!
Take Care,
Diane
