Doves Coats Cottages /Christs Hospital
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 13:46 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

following your amazingly quick help with Huddleston(e)s Row....I am back for more!!

1) Dove Coat Lane/Dove Cote Cottages:

In the 1841 census the Martin family is living on Dove Coat Lane (dovecote?), near Sincil Street and Norman Street

Not sure if it helps, but in 1851 they are living at 7 Norman Street  ???

By 1861 the family is at 7 Dove Cote (this time spelt correctly) Cottages (which I presume is the same as Dove Cote Lane....

The next address on the 1861 census is 23 Norman Street...

My question is: which side of Norman Street would the houses have been located, and do you think they are all really the SAME address??

2) Christs Hospital:

In the 1841 the son Joseph is listed with a large number of children in "Christs Hospital". Looking around on the web I have seen that Christs Hospital is a school and there is also a Christs Hospital terrace.

my question is: is he actually in hospital or at school? And if he is in hospital, where was/is the correct hospital?

Many thanks in advance!  :)

I think Dove Cote Lane became Norman St.  The thoroughfare is shown - unnamed - on 1842 and 1851 maps but is named Norman Street on 1868 map. :)

There were only about 5 houses on it in 1842, perhaps a dozen by 1851 - all on the south side.  In any case, the north side was in St Swithin's parish, only the south side in St Mary le Wigford parish.  In the old days, Norman St ran east/west and did not meet St Mary's St "end on", Sincil St continuing down to Oxford St. http://tinyurl.com/337sm7x

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html
Search Lincoln ... then change the second coordinate to 371100 ... then view the 1889 1:2500 map

Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
