Ann Terrace, Grangepans, Bo'ness
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 12:22 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I've got some ancestors who lived in Ann Terrace, Grangepans (or Bridgeness), Bo'ness in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I have found very few references to this location now and I assume it was swallowed up by an industrial estate or similar?

Does anyone know this street and if it still exists today?

Many thanks,

Nathan.

Hi Nathan

I see references to Ann Terrace as recent as 1958, but it seems to be gone now.

Here's something from the mid 50s...

Hi Nathan

Ann Terrace was a large tenement building taking up the whole of one side of the street.

It was near to the bottom of Philpingstone Road - it was on the west side of Philpingstone Lane - running between Philpingstone Road and the Grangepans Road (A904).  It was knocked down in the 1960's and replaced with more modern housing.  If you look up Philpingstone Lane, Grangepans, Bo'ness on Google Street View you can see what the area looks like now.

I played around Ann Terrace when I was a kid and some of my pals lived in the building - happy days!

Falkirk Library holds many of the old photos of Bo'ness - you might get some images there (I think you may be able to access their archives on-line).

The West Lothian family history center at Blackburn has the valuation rolls for Bo'ness - you could probably get some info from there if your folks were tenants in the building

The Bo'ness Pottery website has census data showing all the pottery workers in Bo'ness.

The 1901 census shows a few of them living at Anne Terrace.

See http://bonesspottery.co.uk/1901census.aspx

Hope this is of some interest.

Hi Alan

Which part of G-Pans did you live? - I lived in Thirlestane Lane up to 1960 and remember the area well as it was then.

Boundary St would have changed significantly by the 70s / 80s - the houses there now were built in the mid 60's.  My father was born at 8 Boundary St in  1929 - small world eh!

Aye it is indeed.

One thing in common - we were both born within the sound of the "Foondry Hoarn".

 ;)

By the way you can keep a lighthearted eye on Grangepans and the rest of Bo'ness here:

www.theboysofoldboness.blogspot.com

It's mostly written by former G-pansers.

Try looking through the archives - some old photos you might be interested in.
