John Wadkins/(Watkins) Potterspury?
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 12:23 BST (UK) »
I've reached a bit of a dead and was wondering if anyone could help.
I'm trying to find the parents or baptism of a John Watkins (also spelt Wadkins). I have found some details on the LDS website but details are a bit sketchy. An IGI entry has his birth around 1769 in Potterspury but I can't be sure. He marries a Martha Ashby on 22 Jan 1794 in Fenny Stratford and they have one daughter Martha Ann (my 3xgrt grandmother) baptised in Cosgrove on 12 Sept 1813. There may be more children (it seems a bit odd that there is only one child from a 20 year marriage) but I can't find any more.
There is a baptism for an Elizabeth Watkins in 1770 in Fenny Stratford with parents Richard and Mary but I don't know of any Richard's further down the tree.
Any help would be greatly appreciated  :) I don't live any where near Northamptonshire but I've realised that the border with Buckinghamshire seems to change quite frequently so I'm a little confused as to which area I ought to be looking in.

Hi Jubee

The only entry which seems likely is :  JOHN WADKINS  -- COSGROVE C of E ---  14 AUG 1763  --- parents RICHARD & MARY

Source : Northants B & B Index copyright ALAN CLARKE  -- website : www.northants-familytree.net/index.html

Hi Dav,
Thanks for the info you've provided  :)
I've just looked on a map and Cosgrove is close to Potterspury (so the rather vague LDS submission may be not too far wrong) and given that John's daughter was baptised in Cosgrove the odds are stacking up....
Also the Elizabeth connection with parents Richard and Mary Watkins seems a likely match as well. John's daughter Martha Ann marries Mathew Hodgins, a canal boatman in 1831 (also in Cosgrove by the way!!). And they have 4 children in Cosgrove before nipping across the border and have more in Linslade, Bucks  ;D
Thank you so much for your time and effort, this looks like a really promising lead.
Ju.

I think I've found Martha Watkins aged abt. 70 living with a Charlotte Watkins aged abt. 30 in Langley Marish Bucks on the 1841 census they are both not of the area.(HO107/61/6 pg.7)
Martha is described as "Ind" so she may be a widow. I can't find a will for John Watkins, although it could be she had received money from other sources.
I've also found a marriage for a John Watkins and a Charlotte Barden in Daventry in 1829. So this Charlotte could be Martha's daughter-in-law.

Hi Ju.

Good to see you may have found some links to your lineage.

There is another marriage on the Northants Marriage Indexes.

Thanks Sandy,
I'm looking more at the Watkins link as these are direct ancestors. Are there any Watkins marriages particularly around the Cosgrove area?
Any help would be appreciated  :) as all the rest of my family tree come from close to where I live, Cheshire/Staffordshire/Shropshire but I'm not familiar with Northamptonshire/Buckinghamshire where this branch originate and it can be a bit confusing trying to confirm links in an unfamiliar area.
Once again thanks for your time and effort searching. :)
