Archibald Campbell Russell *COMPLETED*
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 16:25 BST (UK) »
I wonder if there is any record of this gentleman's death, possibly in Otago, in 1865. I should like to know how he came to be in New Zealand. He was born in London in 1816, into a family of silversmiths and pawnbrokers, and was recorded there in 1856 as having come back from the Crimea, though in what capacity in unclear.

Welcome
If he had been in the army then you would find his name possibly in the regimental lists at places like findmypast or ask on the military section of this newsboard.

Do you know he died in 1865 ??source
there are 2 early ones at BMD 1865 and 1868 the death fiche would need to be checked to find district location
Bye
Althea

Hi Althea, many thanks
I haven't so far found any mention of him in military records. He was working as a pawnbroker in London in 1848 and it seems unlikely that he would have joined the army in his thirties, but I am not sure why else he would have been in the Crimea.
The date of 1865 comes from a note in a family bible, with no further information, which is why I am curious to find out about him.
I believe there was a gold rush in Otago in the 1860s so possibly he went to seek his fortune there.
Tom

Burial Locator shows an Archibald C Russell died 1865 at Dunstan Otago, age N/R.

I have been unable to find a cemetery at Dunstan and not familiar enough with the area to guess where else he might be buried - possibly Queenstown but they have no online search - but <<<You will soon be able to search for cemetery records online.  Watch this space!>>>.

Meantime you could try an email enquiry to services@qldc.govt.nz

Hi crater47,

Papers Past lists several articles mentioning a Rev. Archibald RUSSELL, one (Otago Daily Times, 11 October 1864, p. 4) stating that he had recently arrived per the ship City of Dunedin.

No, that can't be him, since the Rev. Russell officiated at a marriage in 1867 (Otago Daily Times, 12 September 1867, p. 4).

He (or yet another namesake) appears to have left NZ, returning to Otago on the City of Dunedin in 1872 (Otago Daily Times, 31 December 1872, p. 2).

Rats, for a moment there I thought I had him.

Thanks for those replies. The Dunstan record looks a possibility.
There was a Rev. Russell in the family, but this can't be him.
