1830 birth in Belfast
« on: Friday 27 August 10 10:21 BST (UK) »
I have recently been able to confirm some details on my 3Gr Grandfather and need some help in taking a step further.

James Galbraith b.1830 Belfast, County Antrim

Father
Robert Galbraith

Robert and James were a protestant family, but I am not sure which denomination.

Is there any way I can find a birth for James?  I have tried Emeraldancestors, ancestryireland and Familysearch with no luck at all.

Since the date is so far before the start of civil registration it's just a matter of luck whether or not a church baptismal record would survive for that period.
Normally to find church records you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish) but it's usually more difficult in a city like Belfast since there are so many possible churches for every denominations.

Thats the problem aghadowey.  On his army record it just says, Belfast, Parish of Antrim, County Antrim.  It seems a shame that the family tree might just stop at such a relatively short time in the past.  I suppose thats the pitfalls of Irish genealogy.

He was married in a C.O.I. in Fermoy but when he moved to Belfast was very much a Methodist so I suppose it's reasonable to assume that was his families religion.  Nothing like clutching at straws. LOL

I have taken my Scottish wifes tree back to around 1750 without too much trouble.

Hi

Do you know when he died?

There is a James Galbraith in the 1901 Census aged 70 and a Methodist. He was born in Co. Derry. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Shankill_Ward/Mossvale_Street/985220/

John
Stewart, Stuart, Todd, Duncan, Waugh, in Ballyclare, Ballyeaston, Rashee, Cairncastle areas of Antrim, Northern Ireland (Ireland)

I'm afraid that's not him.  I don't have his date of death but the last record I have for him is 1892 when he was sexton at the Clifton Street Methodist church in Belfast.  There is no trace of him or his wife Mary Jane in the 1901 census.

Is there any chance his death cert would provide any further clues if I were to find it?

Would it be worth spending some money to have a researcher find his birth or would thy hit the same wall as me?

Sorry to sound so desperate but this means quite a bit to my mum.

Since the date (c1830) is so far before civil registration of births it's quite possible there will be no surviving church record for his baptism. Even if a baptism for a James Galbraith c1830 with father Robert is found there's probably no way of verifying this is the person you are looking for.

Irish death certificates do not list date or place of birth or names of parents.
