I have come across the occupation of carman a few  times in my research. Does anybody know as to what this is?  Could it be another name for taximan?

Hi Crafty

A carman was someone who drove a horse and cart that delivered goods. A lot of carmen were railway carmen.

If someone delivered goods for a brewery or pub then they were usually a drayman. A carman delivered goods for railways, warehouses etc.

Thankyou Ben,  I have wondered for a long while what this meant and as usual Rootschat comes up with the answers although you were extremely quick with the answer to this  question!

A dray was a cart with no sides pulled by one or two heavy horses typically used for delivering beer.

A carman drove a light cart, sometimes covered, delivering light goods and parcels.
