Thank you Tom, I am now reasonably convinced that I am on the right track - that IGI record would be him.

JSBrunton - I will send you a personal message if you would like to contact me.

Hi,
I've just started researching my husbands family and I believe he and you share a common ancestor. My husbands great great grandparents I believe are

John Brunton and Maria Frances Langley

They had children John (b. 1865 died 1866), Anne (b. 30 July 1866), Robert (b. 1868), Edward (b. 1870), John Arthur (b. 1872), Eleanor (b. 1874), Henry (b. 1876), Donald (1878), Walter (b. 1880), Richard (b. 1882), Archie (b. 1884), Frances (b. 1886)

I had got as far as finding Robert and Anne but then hit a wall. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me!
Thanks

The information I have isn't really confirmed, still a work in progress ( I would appreciate if anyone could confirm this) but what I have so far:

John Brunton (1838-1916) was born in Cousland, his parents were Robert Brunton and Ann Tough/ Touch. Robert was born in Dalkeith in 1796, he died about 1867. He married Ann in 1825 in Midlothian. One of Roberts' brothers was William Brunton who was a quite well known  inventor and engineer.

Ann Tough was born in 1801 in Musselburgh, Midlothian, her parents were John Tough and Mary Gilchrist. She died in Waiwera NZ in 1878.

Robert Brunton's parents were Robert Brunton (b.1748) and Ann Grieve  (father John Grieve). They were married in Dalkeith in 1776. Robert was a clock maker. His father was William Brunton (b.1706 in Dalkeith), his mother was Grissel Dick. They were married in 1738.

William Brunton's father was Robert Brunton (1676- 1708), he married Dorothea Gray in 1702.

That is all I have been able to uncover, I may also have found a little more about Maria Langley as well, but there is nothing to back it up, so I won't post it here. I get the impression the Bruntons of Dalkeith were fairly well known at the time so if anyone has more information it would be appreciated. I would also like to know when the family arrived in New Zealand.

I know it's been almost a decade since the last comment but did anyone get any further with these Bruntons?  My GGGG Grandfather was Robert who arrived in NZ sometime between 1851-1862.  Son of Anne Grieve and Robert Brunton.  They arrived in Australia as assisted immigrants in 1850 with wife Anne, sons Robert (18) and John(9) and daughter Janet (11).  Robert was to work for R Sutherland of Native Creek, Geelong.  I thought I was on the right track going back to his siblings but I've come across a blog type website that has Robert passing in 1852 with his obituary attached.  All family details match - son of Anne Grieve and Robert Brunton, brother of William and John.  Now I'm doubting I have the correct parents for Robert Brunton.  My line stems from Robert's eldest son, also named Robert.  On their immigration records, both Robert Snr and Anne have their ages as 40 which would make date of birth around 1809 - could this confirm that I have the wrong parents for New Zealand Robert? I would appreciate any thoughts on this although it's not urgent as I'm just concentrating on NZ Bruntons at this stage.  Thanks in advance

Hi , I have birth certificate for ann elizabeth brunton and robert brunton twins. Father is william engineer clearly stated on birth certificate. I can send it to you or possibly try to research if this is truly your robert from dalkeith. Williams father was clock maker and ann grieve. The brunton engineers worked for John grieve in various areas around the world.
