Sale of farm West Grinstead
« on: Monday 30 August 10 11:57 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there are any records kept anywhere in Sussex to determine when my Grandfather sold his farm, or indeed whether it was his to sell. It was Fosters farm, West Grinstead.  It would have been circa 1914/15. He lost all his money but I believe never was declared bankrupt.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.

I would try and see if you could get hold of a local paper and see if there is anything in it. When my husbands family had to sell their farm there were several advertisements placed in the local paper advertising the auction.   They sold off assets a few at a time so perhaps your grandfather did the same? As to whether he owned the farm may be the sussex registry office would have deeds for the farm to show who was the owner.

Have a look at the A2A site http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/ and see if either his name or the farm name turns up in the Sussex Archives office catalogues.  You may be lucky.

I have some information for you obtained from a neighbour. I hope it helps

"Fosters Farm

This farm has always been tenanted back to the 17th century - Landlords: Caryll, Burrell, Hornung, Glendyue.

In 1911 the farm extended to 99 acres and 28 perches.  The tenant was C. Seward.

I hope that this helps.

Lots of information about the Burrell family and their estates held at Knepp Castle.  They are still considerable landowners I believe.   http://www.knepp.co.uk/

Thanks very much for that info. I have found out that by  December 1914 (latest) My Grandfather Charles was living at 27 Victoria Road, Emsworth.  My Grandmother died there on December 4th and subsequently by the following August they were in Ealing Middix (Thats where 2 of my Uncles joined up). So at some time between Feb 18th 1913 (My Mothers birth at Fosters Farm) and December 1914 they left the Farm. As I think I stated my Grandfather had severe financial problems which probably led to this. Not sure how I could find out more about this 22 month period...but will keep searching. Thanks for all help.
