County Genealogies
« on: Monday 30 August 10 15:54 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have been using County Genealogies: Pedigrees of the families of Sussex by William Berry to do some research on Webb families in Patcham.
I was wondering if anybody else has used it and how reliable you thought it was?
It does say it used authentic material and visitation notes.

You can find the book on Google books.

Hi Sean,

I don't know about Berry's Sussex genealogies, but have found that his Kent ones are far from reliable.  Unfortunately one erroneous marriage was copied by a great-grandson onto a memorial tablet inscription and from there into websites.  Now lots of people in England, Canada and USA have copied the error onto their family trees.  The wills of the right and wrong entries make it absolutely certain that Berry made a serious mistake.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your response. Yes I have also found what could be inaccuracies hence the question, I guess it should be treated like any secondary source with some suspicion.
