Bellotti arrival in England
« on: Tuesday 31 August 10 11:04 BST (UK) »
The 1851 Census shows Thomas Bellotti aged 34, born Vacallo in Switzerland. He married Hannah Georgina Smee on 28/7/1844 and the marriage certificate shows his father as Paul Bellotti, a farmer.
Thomas settled in the Clerkenwell area of London and was a Looking Glass Maker. I know a lot of skilled Italians and Swiss Italians came to England in the mid to late 19th century but so far have been unable to establish how and when Thomas arrived.
If anyone knows or can advise me where I could possibly find out I would be very grateful.
Thanks,Steve
Bellotti

Hi Steve,

I have a similar problem with a chap with the surname of Potesta  :-\

I went into the chat room and have been told to try and "speak" with Marty who has quite a bit of knowledge/experience re Italian history.  I haven't been successful in "speaking" with her yet due to the time difference as she lives in Australia.  I went online at 2320hrs and someone in another part of Aussie told me it was only 0800am !  LOL

Sorry but that's the only tip I can give you which isn't quite what you were after but..............

Hi - this could have been a family business. Here's glass makers Giovanni and Charles Belotti in Hatton Garden (Clerkenwell area) in 1835: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/19298/pages/1589 (fourth entry)

Another mention for Charles in 1842: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/20151/pages/2850 (second column)

Maybe pursue them for a connection.
Regards
Rob

Thomas Bellotti had 3 daughters, this you may already know. Alice Grace married Henry William Tomlinson and another daughter, Georgina married Robert Sunderland, Robert died and Georgina is shown at the same address as Henry as sister in law. Henry's son John Joseph is my Grandfather. Thomas is my Great, Great, Grandfather.

Not that this helps your question but may be of interest.

Hi mrjeff, thanks for the post. I've often thought that there must be someone out there on the Tomlinson side who will pick up on the Bellotti connection. I have your Grandfather John Joseph as one of 9 children to Alice and Henry. Interestingly Alice had an older brother by the name of John Joseph.

If you don't mind my asking, are you a family member somewhere in the chain?

Yes I am. Alice was one of 11 children to Thomas Bellotti and one of her brothers was Anthony (b.1846) who is my Great Great Grandfather, making Thomas my G-G-G Grandfather. If the chart I use in these matters is correct, that makes us 3rd cousins once removed !
